Caught in the Currents: How Streaming Algorithms Are Both Feeding and Starving Underground Electronic Music

There's a particular kind of irony that follows underground electronic artists around on streaming platforms. On one hand, Spotify's Discover Weekly or Apple Music's algorithmic playlists occasionally drop their music into the ears of a few hundred deeply curious listeners who would never have found them otherwise. On the other hand, those same systems seem almost constitutionally incapable of helping those artists reach the people sitting right next door — fans of adjacent sounds who might genuinely love what they're making, if only the algorithm would just make the introduction.

It's a paradox that's reshaping how niche producers think about releasing music, building audiences, and deciding whether streaming platforms are worth the energy at all.

The Bubble Problem Nobody Warned You About

When you release an ambient drone record or a fractured footwork EP on a major streaming platform, the algorithm needs to categorize it. That categorization process — built on listener behavior, playlist context, and audio fingerprinting — isn't designed with experimental music in mind. It's designed for volume. For hits. For patterns that repeat.

So what happens when your music doesn't fit the pattern? You get bucketed into a micro-niche and served to other listeners already inside that micro-niche. Which sounds fine, until you realize that micro-niche might have 3,000 monthly listeners globally, and the algorithm has essentially decided that's your ceiling.

"It found my people," says Marcus Veil, a Chicago-based producer of textural ambient electronics who releases under the name Pale Corridor. "But it also put a fence around me and my people. I get listeners from Germany, from Japan, from this one very specific cluster in the Pacific Northwest. But I can't seem to crack into the broader ambient or electronic communities, even though what I'm making isn't that far removed from stuff that gets millions of streams."

That fence is what researchers and music industry observers have started calling algorithmic siloing — the tendency for recommendation systems to create self-reinforcing clusters of taste that reward specificity at the expense of cross-pollination.

The Accidental Discovery Engine

Here's where it gets genuinely weird, though. For all its limitations, the algorithm has also done something remarkable for underground electronic music: it's created a global infrastructure for finding your exact listeners, even when those listeners are scattered across continents.

Before streaming, an experimental producer in rural Tennessee had almost no pathway to an audience in Seoul or Stockholm. Now, the same system that caps your growth can also locate the 47 people in the world who are most likely to obsessively replay your record. For a certain kind of artist — one who values depth of connection over breadth of reach — that's genuinely transformative.

"I have listeners I've never met who've streamed my stuff hundreds of times," says DJ and producer Lena Farro, who runs the Los Angeles-based experimental electronics imprint Silt Recordings. "The algorithm found them. I didn't. I couldn't have. That part is real and I don't want to dismiss it."

But Farro is also clear-eyed about the trade-off. The same deep targeting that surfaces her music to dedicated weirdos also makes it harder to reach the broader electronic music communities — the techno fans, the ambient heads, the IDM crowd — who might be open to her work but are never going to stumble across it because the algorithm has already decided she's not for them.

Gaming the System vs. Refusing to Play

In response to these dynamics, underground producers have developed two distinct camps of thought: those who try to game the algorithm, and those who actively resist it.

The gamers focus on metadata, playlist pitching, release timing, and track sequencing — all the small levers that might nudge the recommendation engine toward a wider audience. They study Spotify for Artists dashboards like they're reading tea leaves, looking for signals about which tracks are getting skipped, which ones are being saved, which playlists are driving streams. It's a real skill set, and some indie artists have used it to punch significantly above their weight.

The resisters, meanwhile, argue that optimizing for the algorithm means optimizing against the music. If your goal is to make sounds that challenge, disorient, or subvert listener expectations, then chasing algorithmic approval is a kind of self-betrayal.

"The minute I started thinking about skip rates, I started writing music for skip rates," says experimental producer and curator Theo Bassett, who operates out of Portland. "I caught myself shortening intros, softening transitions. That's not why I make music. I'd rather have two hundred people who really get it than two thousand people who kind of don't."

Bassett now treats streaming platforms almost entirely as an archival tool — a place where his music lives for the listeners who already know to look — while directing most of his energy toward Bandcamp, direct mailing lists, and physical releases.

Playlist Curators Are the Actual Underground Infrastructure

If algorithms are the official gatekeepers, human playlist curators are the unofficial underground network keeping experimental electronic music moving. Independent curators — many of them running playlists with names you've never heard, on platforms you probably don't check — have become critical connective tissue between artists and listeners who are actively seeking out something the algorithm hasn't shown them yet.

"My playlist exists because the algorithm can't do what I do," says Nadia Reeves, who curates the experimental electronic playlist Interference Patterns on Spotify from her apartment in Brooklyn. "I listen to everything. I make connections between sounds that don't share a genre tag. I put a Berlin noise artist next to a Memphis producer making club music that sounds like it's breaking apart. The algorithm would never do that. But listeners love it."

Reeves has built a following of around 12,000 — small by mainstream standards, enormous by underground ones — and she's become a genuine discovery engine for the artists she features. Several have told her that her playlist was the single biggest driver of new listeners they've ever had.

The irony is that her work is itself dependent on the same platforms she's partially working around. She's a human patch for a system that wasn't designed for the music she cares about.

What This Means for How You Release Music

If you're an underground electronic artist trying to navigate all of this, the honest answer is: there's no clean solution. The algorithm will do what it does. You can nudge it, ignore it, or try to work around it, but you can't fully control it.

What you can control is where you put your real energy. Build a Bandcamp. Grow an email list. Connect with curators like Reeves who are doing the human work the platforms won't. Press a limited run of tapes or records that create physical touchpoints the algorithm can't replicate.

And maybe most importantly — make peace with the idea that underground electronic music has always thrived in pockets. The algorithm didn't create that condition. It just made the pockets digital.

The streams are real. The listeners are real. The ceiling is real too. Work with all of it.
